Isaac Ulam (born June 8, 1978 in Blanes, Girona, Spain) is a Spanish multidisciplinary artist known for his work as a film director, actor, screenwriter, musician, photographer, visual artist, and producer. He gained recognition for his debut feature film Bronko (2019), which was pre-selected to represent Spain at the 93rd Academy Awards, received 10 nominations at the 2021 Goya Awards, and a nomination for Best Film at the XIII Gaudí Awards.

His visual artworks, photographs, illustrations, and audiovisuals have been exhibited at galleries, fairs, and private collections internationally.

Early Life

Ulam is the son of Alfonso Serrano Bou and Rosa María Calleja de la Fuente, both textile factory workers. His father was also a painter, writer, musician, and yoga instructor, who founded the Suryanamaskar Yoga Center in Blanes in 1961. Surrounded by artists, Ulam was exposed to art and philosophy from a young age.

At 17, he met Chilean writer Roberto Bolaño, who lived in Blanes. They developed a friendship and often shared conversations on literature and society. Ulam later performed at a tribute to Bolaño in Girona attended by Patti Smith, Juan Villoro, and Jorge Herralde.

Film Career

In 2019, he debuted as a director with the film Bronko, which he also wrote, produced, and starred in. It premiered at Film Noir Cinema in Brooklyn, New York, and was featured by The New York Times. The film received awards at IndieFEST and the Accolade Global Film Competition, where Ulam was named Best Actor. He was also nominated for Best Actor at the Maverick Movie Awards.

By winning an IndieFEST Film Award, Ulam joined other awardees such as Liam Neeson, George Clooney, Blake Lively, Susan Sarandon, and Katie Holmes.

Music Career

Ulam's discography includes Murtra (2013), Ratpenat (2016), and Bellesa i Dolor (2024), recorded with Leonard Cohen's drummer Rafael Bernardo Gayol and Grammy-winning producer Alberto Pérez. His song "He creuat el riu" was featured in the official Pop Rock from Catalonia 2017 compilation.

Collaborations

He collaborated with Pau Riba in several concerts, including exclusive performances in Blanes and Girona that blended Ulam’s contemporary folk with Riba’s avant-garde style.

Current Work

Ulam is currently developing international visual art collections, offering photographic and audiovisual services, and writing his new feature film El aullido humano. He continues to train in traditional martial arts such as Ninjutsu.
